Dallas CASA will present best-selling author Ashley Rhodes-Courter and honor AT&Tand its employees at a fundraising dinner Oct. 14 at The Fairmont Dallas.
The charity, which helps abused children navigate the legal system, will give the annual Judge Barefoot Sanders Champion of Children Award to AT&T. The prize pays tribute to the company’s financial support as well as the 800 volunteer hours logged annually by its employees. AT&T chairman and CEO Randall L. Stephenson will accept the award.
Rhodes-Courter chronicled her trials during nine years in foster care in Three Little Words. She will discuss her experiences, including how she was helped by a CASA volunteer, in an interview with honorary chair Gloria Campos. A retired anchor forWFAA-TV (Channel 8), Campos for many years hosted the station’s Wednesday’s Childsegments about little ones in need of adoption.
Last year, more than 4,300 children in Dallas County were in protective custody of the courts, and CASA had the manpower to assist only about half of them, the organization said. The nonprofit group has a goal of being the largest CASA program in the nation by 2019.
